Mike WallA Craven Arms businessman and former councillor has died aged 60 after a battle with cancer.

Mike Wall, who ran DW Wall and Son butchers, died on Monday.

Today his family paid tribute to a "a very generous man" who always liked to have fun.

He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Sue, daughter Caroline, son Darren, daughter-in-law Celine, and five-year-old granddaughter Sophie.

Mr Wall was born in Ludlow above DW Wall and Son butchers. He set up his own branch of the business in Craven Arms in the 1970s and later became partners with Kevin McGill, who now runs it.

As well as running the family business, Mr Wall was hugely involved in the community. He sat as a councillor for Craven Arms, was on parent and teacher associations, and carried out fundraising work for both Stokesay Primary School and Ludlow School while his children attended.

He also did worked with Craven Arms Brownies, Wistanstow Scouts and the Friends of Whitcliffe Common in Ludlow.

His son Darren today said: "He was a butcher from the age of seven when he worked with his father. He was very generous and always liked to have a good time.

"He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him."

His best friend Vince Bufton said: "He was the brother I never had.

"We were each other's best men, three weeks apart. He was a wonderful person and will be sadly missed.

Mr Wall's funeral will take place at Emstrey Crematorium, in Shrewsbury, on Tuesday at 10am followed by a service at Stokesay Church at 12.30pm.
