Across the UK, at least six people died after one of the worst storms of the year battered the country.

Flash flooding has left roads across the region impassable and the banks of the River Severn have burst in a number of locations, swamping farmland.

Insurers today said the clean-up operation could run into tens of millions of pounds.

One of the worst hit areas in Shropshire was the village of Brockton, near Much Wenlock. A torrent of water poured through, catching motorists unawares and ripping up a main road between Brockton and Easthope.

The village school has also been closed.

David Gibbon, Much Wenlock councillor, said: "It's not flooded now but the road needs to be re-built because the road has gone.

"You wouldn't believe the damage. It's not really a case of people being flooded, it's the damage done to the infrastructure.

"Brockton Primary School is closed today and will possibly be closed tomorrow until a temporary road has been put in place.

"The damage done is unbelievable. Much Wenlock high street just about missed it. Thankfully the first set of drains managed to cope with the excess water."

Brian Bennett, Shropshire County Council's assistant divisional surveyor, added: "The road between Brockton and Easthope (B4371 to B4378) has been severely affected by floodwater over the weekend.

"We have now cleared the debris from the road and it is passable with care. We will install a temporary road surface tomorrow."

Elsewhere in the county, Sundorne School and Sports College in Shrewsbury and Church Preen Primary School near Church Stretton were also closed today.

And thousands of homes in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, lost power earlier today. Power bosses said they were unsure if the fault was weather related.

A spokeswoman for Central Networks said there were 2,522 people without power at 7.28am but some are back on and there are currently 1,281 without power.
