His estate was valued at £3,124,600. Most of this has been left to relatives but organisations across Shropshire will also benefit.

Shortly after Mr Gadsden's death, Peter Duckers, of Shropshire Regimental Museum at Shrewsbury Castle, paid tribute to him and his work for the museum.

Mr Duckers said: "He was a very approachable person, tremendously enthusiastic and very easy to get on with."

Sir Peter's wife, Lady Belinda Gadsden, said he was involved in a huge number of voluntary organisations, and his greatest honour was being made Lord Mayor of London in 1979/1980.

Among his many titles, Sir Peter was president of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Development Trust for 25 years from 1981, a former governor of Wrekin College and a member of the Drapers Company in Shrewsbury.

He was also honourary colonel of the Fifth Light Infantry, based in Shrewsbury, from 1988 to 1993.

Sir Peter was known to many as Trader Gadsden - a globe-trotting trader and expert in mineral sands.
