Recycled items including paper, glass and cans will be picked up in the alternate weeks.

The new fortnightly system is being brought in because Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council is missing out on up to £240,000 of Government cash each year.

The authority is being penalised for not collecting enough recycled materials.

And the change, agreed at a meeting yesterday, will bring the county town in line with the rest of Shropshire which already has fortnightly bin collections.

Councillors will hold a special meeting later this year to discuss the details of the plan after Labour leader Danny Moore called for a seminar to discuss how the new system will work.

Borough council head of finance, Campbell Thompson, said the loss of up to £240,000 of Government money for waste collection and recycling had forced the council to search for new ways to balance the books.

Changes to the Recycling Credits Scheme would have left the authority out of pocket by £120,000 from next year and by £240,000 for every year after.

Council chief executive, Robin Hooper, has suggested charging extra to have bins emptied every week should be looked at.
