The two-time world champion won two games but needed to take one of the 16 boards to return to the competition proper,

'The Count,' world titlist in 2000 and 2009, hoped to begin his resurgence in a tournament where he's reached the semi-finals three times.

But the 47-year-old, who lives in Aqueduct, will not be a part of proceedings when the Euro Sport cameras start rolling, although he is going back to Lakeside.

Hull City Hall opened early for the qualifiers with Hankey benefitting from a bye past the first 512 in Group Three, before whitewashing Craig Quemard 3-0.

He had to battle through to defeat Mark Layton 3-2 in the last leg but couldn't get past Martin Schindler, who beat him by 3-0 landslide.
