Wolves boss Paul Lambert: We didn't do enough

Wolves boss Paul Lambert said his team didn't do enough to get something out of the game as they crashed to defeat at Cardiff.

Lambert's team succumbed to Anthony Pilkington's late winner as they blew an early lead - given to them by Matt Doherty's long-range strike - and dropped below Cardiff in the table to 20th.

The Wolves head coach felt Saturday's exertions in the 4-4 draw against Fulham took their toll - but said there were no excuses for being 'leggy and tired' in the second half.

"We didn't do enough in the second half," he said. "I thought the first half we were pretty comfortable. You can see yourself Cardiff put long balls into the box - throw-ins, corners. We didn't deal with it badly.

"The equaliser was poor, we should have done better with that. We had a chance with George (Saville) to make it 2-1 to us but in general we didn't do enough.

"It was a poor game, a lot of long balls and second balls, George's was the best chance of the whole game and he should have scored.

"Cardiff came out with a bit more urgency than ourselves. We had a really tough game on Saturday and the emotion of that game was draining. But in this league you have to perform every single game.

"This league is unforgiving. They're a young team, I've always said they need experience in there to help.

"We've always been in games since I've been here. We look a threat. But you've got to be stronger in this division."

Lambert made two changes from the team that drew with Fulham - bringing in Richard Stearman and Saville for Kortney Hause and Conor Coady.

He added: "Saturday might have taken its toll. Cavaleiro, Dicko, Costa, I knew it was going to take their toll and that's what can happen.

"It's a tough thing for them. I made a couple of changes to try and freshen it up without making too many changes - and in the first half we were fine, it wasn't a problem.

"The second half Cardiff came out, got a bit of impetus, but before the goal it wasn't damaging.

"There was a bit of pressure, we looked leggy and tired which is no excuse because Cardiff played on Saturday as well.

"But you've got to be able to defend corners."

Cardiff's equaliser came from a corner which was given despite it appearing that Kennth Zohore's shot went straight behind.

"For their equaliser it wasn't a corner," Lambert, who said Carl Ikeme could be fit for Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest, added. "How he's given that I don't know. You always go by the players' reactions.

"Harry (Burgoyne) may have been impeded but first and foremost it was never a corner."
