Wolves fan Davis aims for upset

Wolves fan Steve Davis today upped the stakes ahead of his Boxing Day with Crewe return by revealing how close he came to the top job at Molineux in the summer.

Officials refused to confirm at the time that the 47-year-old Crewe boss – a South Bank regular as he grew up – was spoken to during the interview process for Dean Saunders's successor before Kenny Jackett was appointed in June.

"It was nice to be thought of that way by a big club like Wolves. It was a little bit flattering," said Davis. "But I'm at Crewe and I'm more than glad to be here."

The former Burnley defender – who played against Wolves at Wembley in the 1988 Sherpa Van Trophy final – is relishing trying to beat his boyhood club. And he insisted all the pressure is on Wolves.

"I'm planning trying to put one over a team right up there in the league," he said.

"We're going into this game with no pressure on us – it's all on Wolves to beat us. I'm looking forward to it, having spent many times there as a kid. I hope I enjoy it for different reasons and ebat them. Wolves are in with a great chance of going up, and with the budget and size of the club, that's what you'd expect."
