Stale Solbakken defends Wolves tactics after late leveller
Stale Solbakken today defended his tactics after Wolves threw away the lead at the death in last night's 2-2 draw against Bolton.
Former Wolves midfielder Mark Davies' 90th-minute thunderbolt earned the visitors a deserved point after Kevin Doyle's first-half brace inside three minutes had put Solbakken's side on course for a return to winning ways in the Championship following Benik Afobe's opener.
Wolves failed to match their stirring first-half display after the break when they had just one chance, substitute Bjorn Sigurdarson screwing wide with only keeper Adam Bogdan to beat.
The Molineux men have now lost seven points from winning positions in three home games this season, after conceding late goals to Derby, Crystal Palace and now Bolton.
Solbakken appeared to settle for trying to defend the lead after taking off Doyle for Richard Stearman with nine minutes left.
But he denied the plan was to defend, saying: "There was no plan to sit deep. We were pressurised in the last 20 minutes and that's why I tried to change things.
"We could and should have done better when we led so late in the game.
"We never really got into it in the second half."
Solbakken was critical of his players' ball retention.
"After the interval we lost the ball a lot going forward, and when we should have gone forwards, we passed backwards and when we should have gone back we passed it to no-one," he said.
"So we struggled with the rhythm in the second half and that put us under pressure."
