Town, winless in all competitions previously, took two points from their first Checkatrade Trophy game of the season despite drawing the game in 90 minutes as their lead was pegged back by an added time City penalty at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

That sent the tie to penalties and Town, who had made eight changes from the side that lost at Luton, came out on top 3-1 winners.

Askey applauded his team's performance against a technically sound visiting City development side, adding that plenty of players have staked a claim to be a part of his thoughts for Saturday's League One visit of Bristol Rovers.

"I thought it was a good night considering we made so many changes. It was a good workout for us," said the Salop chief.

"Overall I thought we did well. The lads worked hard and I think it was quite a good game to watch.

"It was different to most Saturdays but enjoyable.

"Very much so the (players coming in) staked a claim. I thought there were a lot of good performances.

"It's nice to be able to make eight changes and still be able to compete. Not only were we able to compete, we should've won the game as well.

"Man City have the pick of the world from under-21s. They do play differently to sides we play week in, week out so we've got to adapt to that and can't afford to allow them the ball."

Askey added on the shootout victory: "It's good for people that have come to watch and adds to the excitement, luckily we've come out on top."

Lee Angol netted the tie's opener after 51 minutes, his second goal in two starts for Shrewsbury.

But sub Ryan Haynes tripped Alpha Diounkou in the first minute of added time, allowing Nabil Touaizi to slot home a penalty and send it to a shootout.

One of Askey's eight changes was Wellington-born star Barnett. The 18-year-old central midfielder or wide player started wide right and caught the eye.

"I think it's great in this competition where players such as Barney can get a game and show what he can do.

"I think he looked as good as anybody on the park.

"When you're playing Manchester City's under-21s and you've got one of your own looking as good as anyone they've got, it's not bad is it?"
