Shrewsbury Town announce £188k training ground transformation
Shrewsbury Town have announced a near £200,000 initial investment to transform their training ground at Sundorne Castle.
Work will begin shortly on erecting new drainage, installing buildings and improving the two full-size pitches and one three-quarter size pitch after a contract worth £188,000 was awarded to Allscott-based contractors Maxwell Amenity Limited.
The aim is to provide the first-team squad with round-the-year use of a permanent training facility for the first time in the club's 130-year history.
The news comes after the land was handed over to the club by Town chairman Roland Wycherley at last month's AGM in return for shares.
My Wycherley had owned the land for some 20 years and allowed the club to use it rent-free when the weather allowed.
Up until now the club has had to use the pitch at the side of Greenhous Meadow and rent out facilities at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
Town chief executive Brian Caldwell said: "Dave Saltman (from Maxwell Amenity), the chairman and I have been working very closely over the past few weeks with regard to the club's new training facility and his specialist advice has enabled us to form a specification and bill of works required, which is an investment of £188,000 for the first phase to bring the surfaces to the levels required for a professional football team to train on all year round."
"This agreement has been concluded now to get full advantage of the upcoming growing season.
''Previously the only works that had been done were to secure the land with a fence and entrance gates and remove old buildings.
"Now the land is in the club's ownership we're delighted to have agreed this with Dave and finally start to invest in the new facility, which will only assist the club going forward."
