Shrewsbury's Sullay Kaikai leads the race

Shrewsbury Town winger Sullay Kaikai is leading the race after being nominated as League One Player of the Month.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Crystal Palace, scored five goals in four games in March to become Town's top scorer.

It triggered Shrewsbury's climb out of the bottom four as they went nine games unbeaten.

It's the second time Kaikai, who now has 11 goals in 20 games for Salop, has been nominated for the award after he won it in October.

And it looks like the Town star is in pole position to pick up the accolade, with his post on Instagram putting him ahead of Wigan striker Will Grigg.

His classy double in the 2-2 draw at Bury will live long in the memory, supplemented by a stunning dribble and shot against Port Vale.

Then came a tap-in in the 2-1 home win against Coventry and another long-range strike in the 2-2 draw against Scunthorpe.

The on-loan Town flier is up against Bradford central defender Nathan Clarke, Burton Albion winger Mark Duffy and Wigan striker Will Grigg.

Clarke helped the Bantams to three clean sheets in six games and provided two assists, Duffy supplied several telling crosses and scored three times.

Grigg netted four in six games, the winner will be announced on Friday.

Manager Micky Mellon believes Kaikai deserves the accolade but stressed if he gets the award, it will be a reflection of how the team has helped him.

The Town boss said: "He's done very well but again he's part of a team that's worked very well around him.

"Sullay is very aware his team-mates work very hard for him so he can put those performances in."

Meanwhile, Mellon has missed out on a nomination for manager of the month – despite guiding Town to an unbeaten March with three wins and three draws.

From six games, Town and Wigan were the only unbeaten teams in League One.

Their identical records put them fourth and fifth in the form table behind Barnsley and Bradford (13 points each) and Rochdale.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom, Rochdale's Keith Hill, Colchester chief Kevin Keen and Walsall interim boss Jon Whitney will contest the award.
