Micky Mellon stunned at Sullay Kaikai snub by England

Micky Mellon has expressed his disbelief that Shrewsbury Town's man of the moment Sullay Kaikai has been ignored by England Under-21s.

The on-loan Crystal Palace star has bagged four goals in as many games to take his tally to nine in 18 for the season.

England Under-21s squad play Switzerland in Thun in a UEFA European Championship qualifier on Saturday and coach Gareth Southgate has suffered three withdrawals through injury.

And Mellon is astounded at the lack of interest in Kaikai.

"I'm shocked he's not been picked for England Under-21s. I cannot believe he's not in that squad," said the Town boss.

"Tell me who's better in that team. I can't catch my breath that a talent like that hasn't been recognised.

"The qualities he has – what is the matter with people?

"What are they not seeing? He's playing first-team football, he's been in Crystal Palace's Premier League squad, he's a young English talent that scores goals consistently in League One, so what more do they want the boy to do?"

Kaikai was born in Southwark, south London, and is eligible to play for his parents' birthplace Sierra Leone, who have courted him, but has kept his options open.
