The 22-year-old has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent, just a day after midfielder Darren McKnight left the club.

Patterson becomes Town's 13th transaction of the January window, and the seventh player to leave.

James Collins, Liam Lawrence, Tyrone Barnett, Mark Ellis, Liam McAlinden and McKnight have all gone, with Sheffield United midfielder James Wallace on loan yesterday the sixth arrival.

Former Barnsley reserve Patterson played twice in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy but never in the league, after being awarded a one-year contract when he impressed on trial over the summer.

In a statement, the club said: "We would like to thank Sam for his hard work and dedication during his time at the club and wish him well for the future."
