Anthony Griffith gives Micky Mellon options

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon believes new signing Anthony Griffith gives him the flexibility to chop and change his formation.

Tough-tackling midfielder Griffith signed a one-year-deal at the Greenhous Meadow yesterday, following his release by League One Port Vale at the end of last season.

And Mellon revealed he is ecstatic to finally get his man after contact was first made with the midfield general a few months ago.

Mellon said: "I'm delighted. I have been determined to get a player like him into the group and it's great to have him because we have been speaking for a while.

"He's just what we need. He is a leader, he is aggressive and he isn't afraid to put a tackle in. I just feel we need that type of player in the group at the minute.

"If the game becomes a real battle we may lack that physical edge and I Griffith will give us that. He's a fantastic character and will do well for us."

Griffith, who has been capped at international level by Montserrat, is the 17th new addition at Town this season and has won promotion to League One in the past with Port Vale.

Mellon said he now has a squad with which he can tinker and that can handle all situations.

He said: "We have got lots of good players and we want to be able to play lots of different formations and shapes.

"We've now got different types of midfielders just like we have got different types of strikers.

"We will face lots of different challenges this season and it's important we always have a way to overcome whatever is thrown at us."

Griffith underwent a minor operation on his hip over the summer but won't be too far away from first team action.
