Shropshire Star

Blog: Tom Eaves, Shrews' Dennis Bergkamp!

Last week I specified exactly what Shrewsbury Town would need to able to take a massive stride towards League One survival, writes blogger Liam Hoofe.

Four points over the Easter weekend and we would be able to enjoy the end of the season with little worry of relegation hanging over our heads.

We managed to do just that and we now sit seven points clear of the relegation places with five games to go.

Unless we have a run of disastrous results, we are looking pretty certain for a spot in League One next season.

And to thank for this joyous Easter weekend we have Tom Eaves, who single handledly dismantled Crawley Town in the second-half of our game on Monday with a sublime hat-trick.

Steve Claridge, on this weekend's edition of the Football League show said Eaves' hat-trick may be comparable to one of Dennis Bergkamp.

While this may seem a bit of an exaggeration, there is no doubt that this young lad is a future star.

All season long, we have pined for a goal scoring striker and now just as the season draws to an end we have found exactly what we have been looking for.

Eaves has now scored six goals in eight games and its begs the question where would we have been had we found him earlier in the campaign.

One downside to this weekend's action was a select bunch of fans decision to jeer Matt Richards when he decided that he, not Tom Eaves who had netted a brace, should take the penalty.

Richards missed the resulting penalty and a select bunch decided to then boo him the next time he received the ball.

They went on to defend themselves stating that Richards had been selfish and was not showing leadership qualities.

Richards has been Town's penalty taker all season and has consistently been a success from the spot.

Whilst Richards is on the pitch, he should be the one who is taking our penalties unless he or the manager deem otherwise.

At 2-0 up I'd rather have an experienced penalty taker step up and put the game away, than take a risk with someone who is not our usual penalty taker.

Despite this minor niggle, Shrews fans have cause for celebration, a win this weekend at Yeovil would all but seal safety, if results were to go our way.

But, either way, I don't feel like it will be too long before we can celebrate officially securing our place in the division.
