Defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff insists sealing promotion with Shrewsbury Town would be the highlight of his career – and believes they could move to the brink of achieving it over the next week.

The 29-year-old defender is now Shrewsbury's longest-serving player and is desperate to end his own personal four-year crusade for elevation to League One.

Town were two points clear of fourth-placed Crawley ahead of this afternoon's home clash with Bradford City.

That game began a sequence of three home games in eight days with Graham Turner's side entertaining Rotherham on Saturday and Port Vale in next Tuesday's twice re-arranged fixture.

And Cansdell-Sherriff is desperate for his side to cash in on that triple header at the Greenhous Meadow, where Town were this afternoon defending a 28-game unbeaten record.

"We are in a great position and we have three home games to come," said Cansdell-Sherriff.

"Realistically we could be close to going up after these three home games and that's the target.

"They won't be easy and we have to work hard to prove why we are near the top, it would make a huge difference."

On the prospect of promotion, Cansdell-Sherriff added: "That is what I came to the club for.

"The chairman (Roland Wycherley) wanted to push for it and it would be icing on the cake to get up to the next division and hopefully we can push on again from there." Cansdell-Sherriff, meanwhile, has followed his manager by issuing a plea for Town fans to roar their side to promotion.

Shrewsbury were backed by a travelling army of around 1,250 at Macclesfield and bumper followings are expected home and away over the final six games.

And Australian Cansdell-Sherriff knows supporters can play a significant role during the run-in.

"That type of support pushes us along," he added. "We need that to keep going at home and away."
