Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has already made moves to strengthen his squad with Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia sounded out about the possibility of coming to Molineux.

Hyypia, 35, is available on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season and offers exactly the type of experience McCarthy is seeking to stabilise his young guns as they enter the Premier League.

The Finnish defender, who has been at Anfield for 10 years, has made 461 appearances for the Reds and won the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Hyypia has been offered a coaching role at Anfield but is considering extending his playing career and Wolves are keen to offer him the chance.

"We're promoted and we've already started looking," said McCarthy.

"I target the players and then Jez (Moxey) sees if we can get them to sign.

"Like every other club, we get reams of paperwork telling us of people who are available."

Wolves have an obvious route to potential Anfield signings through owner-chairman Steve Morgan, whose close friend is legendary Reds goal machine Ian Rush.

McCarthy warned fans there will be no imminent transfer activity from the Premier League, with everything still to be decided.

"We have the distinct advantage of being able to start now," he said.

"But the play-offs don't finish until May 25, the Premier League doesn't finish until the 23rd and the FA Cup final is on the 30th.

"So I don't think anything substantial will be done with the Premier League (clubs) until after then.

"Everyone's concerned about qualifying for the Champions League, getting into Europe and staying up."

Wolves have also been linked with Manchester United's young striker Fraizer Campbell and Newcastle winger Damien Duff, who played under McCarthy for the Republic of Ireland.
