The former Watford youngster is once again expected to take his place on the right side of midfield for tomorrow's trip to Wycombe.
Herd's regular position at full-back has been taken by summer recruit Darren Moss - but the popular Londoner insists he is enjoying adjusting to a new position.
"I worked hard all pre-season and realised there would be more competition with the addition of Darren," said the 22-year-old, who will be making his 98th appearance in all competitions tomorrow.
"Neil Ashton played on the left for a lot of the second half of last season and did a good job so it was a case of me trying to do the same.
"I feel as though I am contributing something to the team which is important because you don't want to be in the side and feel you're bringing nothing when you have someone like Chris Humphrey who offers a different threat on the sidelines.
"I'm still looking to improve but I know I'm not a box of tricks - I have always been an up and down player who works hard.
"I feel I'm getting used to the position now and it's important that you have more than one string to your bow as Kelvin Langmead and Ashy have proved.
"We will get injuries all through the season so versatility is vital.
"I'm enjoying playing on the right of midfield. There is probably a bit more pressure because the team have worked hard to get the ball out to you so it's vital you put in a good delivery.
"It's a lot more precise because when you are a defender you can play the percentage ball because you have 90 per cent of the field in front of you."
Herd is carrying a level head to Wycombe as Town search for the victory which will maintain their place amongst the early League Two leaders.
But he admits anything less than three points would leave the visitors frustrated.
"We respect Wycombe like any team in this division because they are a decent side," he added. "But it's all about us and playing to our maximum. On our day we feel we are a match for anyone.
"The great thing is that we are all disappointed with the way we have been playing, and that's all credit to the lads.
"We have been coming in on a Monday and feel as though we have lost games when we have actually won because we have been disappointed with the way we have played."
