But Shrewsbury Town left David Beckham trailing at a charity auction where a shirt signed by the Gay Meadow players went for £1,000, while the Galactico's Real Madrid kit only fetched £600.

The two tops were sold as part of a James Bond-themed fundraiser held at The Albright Hussey Hotel, near Shrewsbury, on Saturday night.

The event was organised by Adele Cooke and her husband Phil, from Uffington, and raised about £6,000 for Leukaemia Research and the Severn Hospice.

Mrs Cooke said: "I was amazed that the signed David Beckham shirt went for less than the Shrewsbury Town one, but it must be nice for the club to know they are more popular."

She said her husband picked up the shirt worn by the former England captain through his work contacts in Spain.

But Shropshire sports fans voted with their wallets as bids for the Shrewsbury Town shirt outstripped that of the famous new LA Galaxy signing.

Beckham was not the only famous name at the event. Although 007 star Daniel Craig didn't make it in person, a fleet of Aston Martins and a Craig look-a-like welcomed guests to an evening at the roulette wheel.
