Steep learning curve for MP Craig as he plays his role at the treasury

A member of the treasury team, it has been a baptism of fire for the MP, who was only elected to parliament in December 2019 and appointed to the department just weeks before the pandemic and lockdown struck.

He was in the House of Commons on Wednesday to hear the Chancellor’s speech. “I was elected 15 months ago but gosh it seem an age ago,” he said.

“With Covid, the lockdown and Brexit, I don’t think our economy has seen such a stark change in such a short time before.

"It has been a massive responsibility for the treasury team – who would have thought we would have been paying millions of people’s wages through furlough, for example?

"That has been a real lifeline to the population.”

Mr Williams said he had been delighted that money to fund the Mid Wales growth deal that been accelerated in the Budget.
