Warning over milk

The chairman of Shrewsbury Livestock Market is urging the public to wake up to the threat to UK milk supplies as dairy farmers continue to leave the industry at an alarming rate.

David Giles, a director of Halls and a dairy specialist, fears that the UK will need to import more milk unless our farmers are paid a fair price for their quality product.

"With the prices received by farmers for milk so low, you have got to be very keen to stay in the industry," he said.

"Thankfully the farmers that are staying are hopeful that things will get better and are investing in the future.

"The Government, dairies and supermarkets need to start giving our dairy farmers a fair deal. The public needs to realise that if the number of dairy farmers leaving the industry carries on unchecked, there is going to be a shortage of quality home-produced milk."
