Delight as Telford school nets top marks in Ofsted
Pupils and teachers at primary school near Newport were celebrating today after it was ranked 'outstanding' across the board by government inspectors.
St Peter's Church of England Primary School, in Stackyard Lane, Edgmond, received a glowing report after a recent Ofsted inspection.
The school was rated 'outstanding' in all four areas: achievement of pupils; quality of teaching; behaviour and safety of pupils; and leadership and management.
It is an improvement from its previous inspection in 2007 when it was graded 'good'.
Headteacher Caroline Hawkins said: "This is a super achievement and it is one that the entire school community truly deserves.
"I am thrilled that the inspectors recognised not only the tireless hard work, commitment and dedication that is evident every day across school, but also the school's individuality and desire to evolve."
The school has 189 pupils aged four to 11. Inspectors visited 19 lessons and spoke informally to 30 parents.
The report praised the school's leadership team.
Inspector Gerald Griffin said: "The headteacher's uncompromising drive for excellence is enthusiastically shared by the staff who each make a valuable contribution to the school's outstanding capacity to sustain improvement.
"Since the previous inspection, leaders have improved markedly the teaching of mathematics and, as a consequence, progress in this subject."
There was also praise for the high expectations of teachers at the school and the high standards set for behaviour.
Mr Griffin added: "Pupils are very polite and courteous to adults and to each other."
