Roadworks, costing £2 million, started last night eastbound between junctions two for Wolverhampton and three for Cosford.

It means the eastbound carriageway closing completely each night from 10pm until 6am.

The maintenance work aims to fix the motorway's drainage and should be completed by the end of March, say Highways England.

However, the work could go on into April due to weather conditions delaying the work.

As part of the work, Highways England will be removing debris along the verges and central reservation, clearing vegetation from the main drains, and fixing drains on both carriageways and on the central reservation.

The work comes after"concrete slab failures" on the eastbound carriageway.

Highways Agency spokesman Alistair Harris said there would be one night, still to be announced, when both the east and westbound carriageways would be closed to enable workmen to operate safely.

He said: "The work should be finished by April 15, but if everything goes well and the weather is kind it should end by the end of March.

"Diversions will be in place and should be clear to follow."

The M54 roadworks come as a busy commuter route between Shipley and Telford, the B4176, closes from 9.30am to 4.30pm for 12 days for resurfacing.

The work involves carriage resurfacing between Monarchs Way and Crowgreaves Farm, near Stableford. The road is known as the 'ratrun' because it is popular with commuters wanting to avoid the M54. But it has been affected by dangerous potholes because of subsidence to the edge of the road.

And the A442 between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster will close overnight from Sunday, March 20 for three weeks to make way for a number of essential works.
