The current Market Drayton skatepark, close to the swimming pool, would be closed and replaced with a larger open plan site under plans revealed today.

The plan is backed by the police as a way to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Market Drayton Town Council has pledged £80,000 towards the scheme and is now bidding for another £75,000 from other sources.

It wants to create a park that would serve young people in the town and also attract enthusiasts from across the county.

Councillor Roger Hughes, who is pushing forward the plans, said: "We hope it will be one of the best in Shropshire. We've currently got a survey up to give people a chance to put forward their views.

"We want to see if we are able to get some lottery funding or match-funding."

The survey, on the council's website, asks people how many times they use the current park and what they consider to be the most important features.

The new park will be used by skateboarders and BMX riders.
