Neighbours star Alan Fletcher to open Telford Tigers' shop
Neighbours star Alan Fletcher – who plays Dr Karl Kennedy in the long-running Australian soap – will officially open the new Telford Tigers ice hockey team shop at the town's ice rink this weekend.
And the actor said he is looking forward to his first taste of British ice hockey after he "fell in love" with the sport when watching the National Hockey League.
The 57-year-old, who has played Erinsborough's resident GP for 20 years, is a huge ice hockey fan and long-time friend of Tigers owner Wayne Scholes, who has invited him over as guest of honour.
He will be signing autographs for Neighbours and Tigers fans alike inside the new shop, which will sell a range of club merchandise including replica shirts, toys, clothing and tickets, before watching the Tigers take on Manchester Phoenix.
Alan said his first experience of ice hockey came watching the top level NHL from America on television – and said that he could not wait to watch the sport at Telford Ice Rink.
He said: "I've never seen a game of ice hockey live, and my knowledge is limited to watching the NHL with my son.
"I fell in love with the speed, passion and skill that is integral to the game. And, of course, the contact."
Mr Fletcher agreed to open the shop after talking to Mr Scholes about the Tigers in Australia.
He said: "Wayne excitedly told me all his plans for the Tigers.
"I can't wait to get to Telford on Sunday and witness first-hand the transformation.
"I was honoured when Wayne asked me to open the store.
"Fans need to be able to fully express their support and passion for the team.
"I am sure this new store will be a boon for Tigers supporters."
Mr Scholes said he was keen to increase the club's exposure and profile, both in Shropshire and across the UK.
He said: "It is important that we introduce more people to ice hockey around the area so everyone can see what a great family sport it is.
"Alan has played Dr Karl Kennedy so brilliantly for decades and has a massive following of dedicated fans around the world, which will help us expand the Tigers brand globally.
"On top of that he is a sports fanatic so we are excited to welcome him to the Tigers as our newest fan."
