Shrewsbury Town offering 200 free match tickets to forces personnel
Shrewsbury Town have offered more than 200 free match tickets to serving military personnel this weekend.
Town take on Burton Albion in a league two clash on Saturday that will be about more than just football.
The Armed Forces Community Covenant has teamed up with the club to give fans an opportunity to meet personnel from local Army, Navy and RAF units.
Shrewsbury Town has offered the free match tickets to serving military personnel and their families.
The day is about celebrating the special historical relationship between the club and the armed forces.
From noon until 2.45pm, members of the armed forces will be setting up a fan park outside the stadium, with a host of free activities.
The fan park will include an inflatable assault course, weapons, personal equipment and kit and a laser clay pigeon shoot.
Military vehicles with weapons will be on display along with a field catering tent and field hospital and recruitment stands.
The football club have invited 24 VIPs to the Sovereign Suite for a three-course meal starting at 1.30pm.
All VIPs are senior military officers and their partners or relatives.
At 2.50pm, RAF Shawbury will be delivering the match ball via helicopter to a VIP chosen by the club, and the VIP will then pass the match ball to the referee.
Tim Barker, of Shropshire Council, said: "The Armed Forces Community Covenant represents an important method for our military to communicate with the public and local businesses. The fan park will allow people to meet our armed forces and gain a better understanding of what they do while enjoying many exciting activities.
"Shrewsbury Town are great ambassadors of the covenant and it would be great to see more local businesses become involved."
