Free parking for 46,500 cars at Royal Welsh Show
Bosses of the Royal Welsh Show are to offer 46,500 free car parking spaces at this summer's event – despite also introducing a £20 charge for one area.
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society said that while it would for the first time be charging a £20 fee for the 500-space car park opposite the showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, it will still offer thousands of free spaces.
Steve Hughson, chief executive of the society, said it was proud to be one of the few agricultural grounds that still offered free parking for events such as the Spring Festival, the Royal Welsh and the Winter Fair.
He added: "The provision of this free parking cost the society £419,000 last year which equates to £5 per vehicle parked. Each of our satellite car parks have dedicated forward parking areas for blue badge holders and the shuttle buses system suitable for people with disabilities.
"This year the society has identified a small car park right next to the showground which is being offered as premium paid for parking to life members, governors and blue badge holders.
"The daily fee is £20, with a 75 per cent discount for blue badge holders, making their fee £5 per day. In addition we offer a minibus equipped to deal with visitors with disabilities or blue badge holders from this car park into the showground. This car park will hold a maximum of 500 cars and is the only area where charges are applied.
"This new facility is constantly under review as we are sensitive to the needs of all our visitors. "
This year's Royal Welsh Show takes place between July 21 and 24.
