Prisoner who murdered inmate at Stoke Heath is on the run
A prisoner who stabbed to death a fellow inmate during a cookery class at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institute in Shropshire is on the run.
Maurice Travis, 33, was jailed for life in 1999 after he pleaded guilty to the murder of 17-year-old Alan Averall at Stoke Heath.
Travis stabbed his victim three times with a knife after a row over a piece of chocolate cake.
Greater Manchester Police said Travis absconded yesterday while on temporary licence in the Werneth area of Oldham.
He is described as being white, 5ft 9in tall and has short cropped brown hair.
He was wearing black jeans, a black jacket with white motif on top of left shoulder and white trainers.
Travis has links to the Tameside, Oldham and Salford areas.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Mangan said: "While we do not believe Travis presents a significant threat to the public, he is unlawfully at large and he needs to be returned to prison.
"I would ask anyone with information about where he currently is, has been or could be heading contacts us in confidence."
Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8972/8825 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
