Emergency services were called out to rescue the pair after the car skidded on black ice on Saturday night.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue said: "The car was about to slip off the cliff face. It came to rest in a very precarious position on the road.

"The two occupants were transferred to the police vehicle and then we pulled the car back from the edge."

About 370 residents in Ludlow were reportedly left without water overnight after a burst water main last night. Supplies were back on by 4am.

Snow has already fallen on high ground in the south of the county over the weekend, and the Met Office is forecasting that sub-zero temperatures will remain for the rest of the week with the mercury dipping as low as -7C (19.4F).

A spokesman said: "It will be cold and cloudy with rain, sleet and snow through the morning today, with some significant accumulations of snow over the hills.

"It should turn a little brighter with scattered showers of rain and sleet during the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of 5C (41F). Showers of rain, sleet and snow will continue during the evening for a time.

"For the rest of the week it will be staying cold and largely dry. It will be very cold at night with temperatures dropping as low as -7C (19.4F) and hard frosts can be expected."
