Tom Johnson, 18, was attacked in Cheshire Street, Market Drayton, in the early hours of Sunday after apparently stepping in to try and stop a dispute.
Tom, who works at Argos, was taken to Telford's Princess Royal Hospital following the incident just before 2am.
His mother Claire Johnson today said Tom had no recollection of the attack and 'looked dreadful' on his arrival at hospital. But she said his condition appeared to be improving and thanked all those who had sent 'fabulous' messages of support.
She said: "He has fractured his skull and has bleeding to the front of his brain." She added: "There is a lot of anger in the town about this as he was just trying to step in and help someone else."
Richard Ewels, a West Mercia Police spokesman, said an 18-year-old man and a youth aged 15 had been arrested on suspicion of assault. Both had been given conditional bail while enquiries continued.
