One of Mid Wales's Young Farmers' Clubs has folded because of a lack of members.

Llangurig branch of the YFC near Llanidloes has not met for several months and now officials have decided it should close.

A spokeswoman for Montgomeryshire YFC said despite efforts from county officials to keep it open, it had made a decision to close the branch.

She said the club's assets had now been frozen for up to seven years, unless someone could be found to restart the club.

"Members numbers have been dropping for several years, with some local young farmers choosing to go to other nearby clubs," she added.

"Until 2008, the club had between 20 and 25 active members. However, clubs need at least six members to stay open and without a network of support for past members, it is hard to keep the club open.

"If someone comes forward to restart the club, then that would be no problem at all. We have had some good members who have gotten married and had children and no longer have as much free time.

"These things go in circles. For example, 20 years ago Aberhafesp was a very successful club and then it closed. Three years ago, it restarted and now has a membership of 35. Clubs can reopen you just need the right person."
