Yobs damaged a public library as they went on a "wanton" wrecking spree causing more than £1,000 damage in Market Drayton, police said today.

Damage was caused to windows at Market Drayton Library and shops in the town.

Police are investigating the spate of window-smashing vandalism and treating the incidents as criminal damage.

The damage at the library in Cheshire Street and at the Pheasant Grill Café and Cookies Fish and Chip Shop, both in Queen Street, happened overnight on Friday.

Police described it as "wanton vandalism" with the repair bill believed to be well over £1,000. None of the premises was entered.

At the Shropshire Council-owned library, the top pane of the sliding door at the front of the premises was smashed.

Those responsible hurled beer bottles at the front window of the Pheasant Grill Café, causing the laminated glass to shatter, and a roof tile was used to smash a hole in a double glazed unit at Cookies.

Police believe the damage to Cookies happened at around 4.45am on Saturday and that two or three offenders were responsible.

A police spokesperson said: "All three incidents appear to be linked.

"We are treating them as criminal damage and would welcome any information from witnesses or others which might help our investigations.

"We are anxious to identify those responsible and will be carrying out checks on CCTV cameras."

Elsewhere, several cars were damaged on the communal parking area at Norman Brook Court in Market Drayton.

Market Drayton police are treating the incident as criminal damage.
