The body was discovered by officers at the house in Castle Street, Oswestry, at about 4pm yesterday.

Officers arrested a man, believed to be in his 40s, in connection with the death in Shrewsbury today.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Morgan said: "We are keeping an open mind concerning the circumstances and we are treating it as an unexplained death.

"A post mortem is being carried out by a Home Office pathologist later today."

The man was this afternoon in custody at Shrewsbury police station.

Detective Inspector Gavin Kinrade said: "We are appealing for any information from local people who might be able to assist our inquiries with details about the woman's movements over the past few days.

"They should contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000."

Forensic officers set up a tent in the front garden of the house at 11am today. Officers from West Mercia Police's incident support team arrived to assist the investigation shortly after.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock at Mrs Wycherley's death, describing her as "one of Oswestry's real characters".
