A Shropshire school has been left shocked by the sudden death of a pupil. Greta Wilkinson, from Shrewsbury, a Year 11 pupil at Shrewsbury Girls' High School, died on Wednesday.

She was today described as a pupil of "tremendous potential".

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said the death was being treated as "unexplained". An inquest was expected to be opened today.

School spokesman Ben Jason said the whole school has been shocked by the news.

"She was a very bright, very intelligent girl, with tremendous potential," he said. "We are enormously saddened."

He said the school grieved together on Thursday. He added: "It was a very emotional day but the school is a very strong community and we all helped each other."

Staff at St George's Junior School, in Shrewsbury, where Greta used to be a pupil today described her as a "very intelligent, quiet and pleasant girl who shone at drama and art".

Rev Mark Thomas, of St Chad's Church, who works closely with the school, said: "Obviously we are keeping Greta and her family in our prayers at Church at St Chad's."

A police spokeswoman said: "We were called to a house in Shrewsbury at 12.50pm on Wednesday following a report from the ambulance service.

"Officers attended and found the girl had been taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

"The death is being treated as unexplained and police are not looking at any other parties in connection with the incident."
