Aluminium giant Alcoa's £1.67 billion buyout of a UK-based jet engines business will not impact on its Telford operation, the company says.

The US-based group, which has a major rivet and fastener factory in the town, has moved to buy Firth Rixson from private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners, and expects to close the deal by the end of the year subject to regulatory approval.

Firth Rixson has operations in the UK, US, continental Europe and China.

It is intended to diversify Alcoa's operations, but bosses say that Telford's plant will continue with its existing manufacturing operation.
