Wendy gets creative to bring comfort and remind us to appreciate our present day heroes

Wendy Woollaston, originally from Shrewsbury, who now lives in Hereford, wants to remind us of the importance of remembering the families of those in uniformed forces, who often have to live with long separations alongside the daily worry of the work they do for our protection.

Wendy says: "I made knitted soldiers for my daughter who lives in Shrewsbury, whose partner is often away for long periods, to cheer her up. l want people not to forget that our soldiers today are always prepared and ready to protect our country, and the stress and sacrifice made not only by them, but their loved ones left at home.

"I admire the wonderful knitted D-Day exhibition The Longest Yarn, and can understand the great pleasure it has given many in putting it all together.

"I have another son in the police force and knitted a police doll too. I think knowing the daily danger of both of these jobs it has been my way of showing my respect for their courage and maybe an attempt to reduce my own fears.

"We appreciate our forebears who served at D-Day, but do we appreciate our present day heroes?"
