Mike Williamson set for shock Wolves injury comeback

Forgotten man Mike Williamson looks set for a shock return to the Wolves fold after Paul Lambert described him as a 'terrific player'.

The 33-year-old has been blighted by injuries since moving to Molineux from Newcastle in January.

The luckless defender has not kicked a ball for Wolves since that £200,000 transfer but is now close to returning to full fitness. And Lambert admits he is a big admirer of the centre-back, who he previously managed at Wycombe.

"We're starting to get a few players back from injury so the squad is looking more healthy than it was," the head coach said.

"Lee Evans and Joe Mason will start to join in shortly as will Mike Williamson.

"I know Mike really well from my time at Wycombe. He has been training and he's doing ever so well at the minute.

"Hopefully, he can get a good week under his belt, have no complications and we'll look to arrange a game for him.

"He's a terrific experienced player, knows the game inside out and if we can get him back and fully fit he'll be a big plus for us."

Lambert believes adding Williamson to his squad will be like making a new signing.

"A new signing and an experienced one too," he continued.

"I think with the youthfulness of the team, it needs a wee bit of experience."

Meanwhile, Lambert says he will give number one goalkeeper Carl Ikeme every chance to be fit to face Cardiff tonight.

With both Ikeme and Andy Lonergan sidelined, 19-year-old Harry Burgoyne made his Wolves debut in Saturday's 4-4 draw with Fulham.

"Andy won't be available for Cardiff but Carl, we'll wait and see," Lambert said.

"He's looking to be the better out of the two of them and we'll make a decision in the morning."

Lambert, though, would have no qualms continuing with Burgoyne in goal.

"None whatsoever," he added. "He was very good against Fulham. It was sink or swim, he got thrown in at the deep end and held his own.

"He's got the temperament for it."
