Paul Lambert hails 'terrific' Wolves win

Boss Paul Lambert was delighted Wolves ended their long winless run with a 2-1 win at QPR - but felt they should have won even more comfortably.

Lambert's team missed a host of clear-cut chances when 2-0 up at Loftus Road after goals from David Edwards and Helder Costa.

The visitors were helped by James Perch's early red card and eventually made their man advantage tell - but not before a late onslaught from the hosts who pulled one back and threw everything at Wolves in nine minutes of injury time.

"We should have been 5-0 up," Lambert said when asked for his primary emotion following the win. "Unbelievable. We had three or four one-on-ones and should have finished the game.

"I thought we earned the right to win the game with the start we had.

"We had one or two chances before the sending off against a team that's really difficult to play against, a small ground with the crowd on top of you.

"It's a terrific win. We're a young team and losing Carl Ikeme (to injury) was a blow too. I thought we deserved to win.

"I've only been here two and a half weeks and we've had a draw and a loss.

"There's a lot of hard work to be done and we have to try and get to January and get a bit of help in. But the nucleus are good players."

Wolves laid siege to QPR's goal after Edwards broke the deadlock in the second half with his fourth goal of the season.

What was Lambert most pleased about with his team?

"There's more enthusiasm for the game, more intensity, we looked more of a threat and also stronger defensively," he added.

"I still think we can be better in a lot of aspects. It's a decent start and I think we're playing pretty well.

"We always looked a threat and after the sending off if we moved the ball quickly we could hurt them. And that's what happened.

"Coming through that will stand them in good stead.

"That (late onslaught) will happen because they've scored, they've got the seven minutes going up, all the usual things.

"We had to be strong mentally to see it through. But the bottom line is we should have scored five ourselves. If we take our chances then that becomes nothing.

"Cavaleiro and Costa were getting on it for us, which was our game plan, and Dicko looked a threat all night.

"The front three had pace and I knew something could happen."

Ikeme withdrew late on with an achilles injury. As for the Perch sending off for two bookings - the first of which QPR boss Ian Holloway vehemently disagreed with - Lambert said: "It probably went in our favour. (But) when you go to ground and you're on a booking you run the risk of another one."
