Wolves face QPR at Loftus Road tonight knowing that defeat will see them drop into the Championship's bottom three.

After a winless run of nine games, confidence is low in Lambert's squad. But the Scot insists he is well equipped for the fight.

"If you're talking battle-hardened – absolutely I am," he said. "I know what's got to be done. We've got to rectify this really quickly.

"My own football career was never glitz and glam.

"People actually portray me as being dour. But if you get to know me I like a laugh, but I also know there's a serious side to football."

Lambert has already come in for criticism from some fans despite only being in charge for two games.

He admitted there was no such thing as a 'honeymoon period' for a new boss in 2016.

"You don't get one!" he said. "Those days have gone. Honeymoon periods don't exist in football any more, I think you get a millisecond now. I never have looked at football as a honeymoon period, even when I played.

"I had to work my backside off to get to where I got to, and I certainly do (the same) with this.

"You don't get any time. If you've got a strong board and chairman then they're the ones that probably have success because they don't hire and fire people really quickly.

"But you see it throughout the world of football – if you lose games you can be away, that's the nature of the game."

Young striker Niall Ennis has undergone surgery for a fractured fibula.

The 17-year-old, who was on the verge of making his first-team debut before suffering the injury in training last week, tweeted to say: "Operation complete and went well, soon back on my feet working hard in rehab and then playing again before you know it."

On-loan winger Ola John is expected to return in two weeks as he continues his recovery from a hamstring strain.
