Ex-Wolves defender Kevin Foley defender training with Town
Shrewsbury Town have thrown a fitness lifeline to former Wolves full-back Kevin Foley – but are open-minded about signing him at the moment.
The 31-year-old is training with Micky Mellon's squad as he bids to get fit after a shoulder operation. His injury limited him to four substitute appearances for FC Copenhagen, who he left in the summer after six months.
Former Republic of Ireland international Foley was the trialist who played for Town in Monday's 4-0 reserve win over Burton Albion, and is at the Greenhous Meadow as a favour through chief executive Matt Williams, who knows the player from his first loan spell at Blackpool.
The utility man, Wolves' Player of the Year when they reached the Premier League in 2009, made 213 appearances for them from 2007-15 and is one of only three players with ex-Town midfielder Dave Edwards and Richard Stearman who figured heavily in the club's rise and fall up to the Premier League and down to League One.
Williams stressed Foley, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, is not yet being considered as a potential signing.
"Kevin is someone I know very well having worked with him for a short time at Blackpool and I've remained in contact with him since," said Williams.
"Micky and myself are always trying to find little diamonds.
"But this is a case of us letting him train here because he needs to know where he is fitness-wise.
"If we make him an offer, we make him an offer. But if we don't, then so be it."
Williams added: "I regard Kevin as a mate, just as I regard Micky, and Micky's allowed Kevin to come in and train here.
"I'm sure Micky's asked Liam Lawrence about Kevin from their time playing with Ireland and he's just a good influence.
"Having Kevin here can only benefit us because he's an international."
