Richard Stearman backed for Ireland call

Resurgent Wolves defender Richard Stearman was today backed to become the club's latest full international and make the Republic of Ireland squad.

Head coach Kenny Jackett believes Stearman can follow new Mali caps Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko and earn full honours for his adopted country.

The 26-year-old Wolverhampton-born stopper has appeared for England age groups to Under-21 level.

But he qualifies for the Republic through grandparents on his mother's side and received clearance to play for Ireland from FIFA a year ago.

As yet, Stearman hasn't been selected for a squad, but Jackett believes he can get the nod now he's at a higher level again.

"If he can shine in the Championship, there's no reason why he couldn't do it," said Jackett.

"Who are his competitors? Richard Dunne, John O'Shea and Sean St Ledger are three. It will be interesting but I'm sure Martin O'Neill will be aware of Richard.

"It's a big year for him, and, if he has aspirations of playing for Ireland, he'll want to hit the ground running and impress in this Championship.

"Kevin Doyle played for Ireland while he was in League One but maybe he's more established having had 50 caps. The higher you go the better your chances are.

"Richard is coming into the best years of his career for his position."

Stearman is also confident of making the grade at international level.

"I was on standby for one squad last season but maybe playing in League One hindered me," he said. "But if I play regularly in the Championship, maybe I can put myself in the frame."

"My clearance came through when they were chopping and changing – I think they must have lost my number! So we'll just have to wait and see how things go this season."

Wolves play their final friendly of their pre-season tour tonight at Bohemians.

And with O'Neill this week promising to look at Irish players in their club environment, Stearman hopes to earn some rave reviews locally.

"Possibly being back in Ireland might spark something and if that comes along, it would be great," he added.
