George Elokobi is tipped for new Wolves role
Popular George Elokobi has been told by head coach Kenny Jackett to focus on re-inventing himself as a central defender.
The Cameroon defender made his seasonal bow in his new role at Gillingham last weekend as Richard Stearman's replacement.
His performance earned warm plaudits from Jackett and provided a much-needed confidence lift after a difficult decline in Elokobi's career triggered by injuries and loss of form.
But the rampaging left-back Mick McCarthy signed in 2008 is a thing of the past now as Jackett sees a player who will be 28 at the end of this month concentrating on central defence.
Jackett said: "George didn't do anything wrong at Gillingham, that's for sure. It was his first start as a centre-half for me and that's where I see him playing.
"In the modern game, full-backs have to have attacking ability, to get down the line and effectively become attacking players. I'm not saying he can't do well for us at full-back but I think his future is as a central defender now."
