Wolves must sell Doyle, admits Kenny Jackett

Kenny Jackett today admitted Wolves can't afford to keep Kevin Doyle – as he removed Tongo Doumbia and Georg Margreitter from his plans.

The Molineux head coach admitted the Ireland international's estimated £40,000-a-week wages were too much of a drain on resources with the club in League One.

Wolves are understood to have told Celtic, who are long-term admirers of the 29-year-old, that they want £2m for their one-time club record £6.5m buy.

But Jackett's first public admission that the club needs to shed the huge salary of Doyle – one of the few to sign a deal that it's understood did not include a relegation clause – is a sign that the club wants a quick deal.

"In terms of Kevin, his wages are too high for League One for where we are," said Jackett.

"That's common knowledge and between now and the end of the window there will be interest in him."

Jackett banished Doyle, Tongo Doumbia and Georg Margreitter to train with outcasts Roger Johnson, Stephen Ward and Jamie O'Hara on Friday.

Doumbia and Margreitter have now been effectively told they are out of Jackett's plans.

"They're a bit further out, definitely, in terms of my plans," he said of the pair.

"The Under-21s had a game at Chasetown and those (six) guys weren't involved in any of those games, so they had to train separately because we're going into the games."

But Jackett refused to shut the door on Doyle in the short term after Richard Stearman, Dave Edwards and George Elokobi were injured in Saturday's opening 0-0 draw at Preston.

"He's not match-fit but with the injuries we picked up, it will be an interesting one in terms of him coming on and being able to contribute," he said.

"He's not somebody I'm necessarily going to close the door on, if he's right, available and the team needs him.

"But I haven't been planning with him because I was thinking he would go."
