Wolves want to sign David Edwards to a new deal

The 27-year-old is out of contract this summer but the club have a 12-month option they can activate at any time.

Edwards, who is two games short of 150 for the club after joining in January 2008, scored the first goal in Tuesday's 2-0 win at Millwall.

Saunders knows the former Shrewsbury man well from his time coaching the Wales national team and he has been impressed with the hard-running midfielder.

Edwards follows Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Danny Batth in being recommended for a contract extension by the Molineux chief.

"Providing we could agree something, I'd like to keep him at the club," said Saunders. "He's a good character, he won't let you down, he's got an eye for a goal and he can play anywhere.

"I've worked with him for Wales and I've seen him score goals exactly like the one he did on Tuesday. He's a good professional, a great lad and he's just got on with it when he's not played.

"He covers the ground, he's a team player and if you ask him to do a job he does it – he doesn't think of himself, he plays for the team. If he doesn't play well, it's not through lack of effort."

Saunders recalled Edwards ahead of Slawomir Peszko, whose exile has left some fans baffled.

But Saunders explained: "Sometimes supporters would prefer an out-and-out winger beating people – and sometimes I would – but you have to make the team function properly."

Meanwhile, the club is close to putting a 'two-tier' offer together for 12-goal top scorer Ebanks-Blake that would apply whichever division Wolves are in next season.
