Mick McCarthy's warning to Wolves fans

Mick McCarthy today warned that disgruntled Wolves fans could drive out his successor Stale Solbakken - as he thanked the fans for their generous reception at Molineux on Saturday.

The Ipswich boss was afforded warm applause before and after the game, which his side won 2-0 in his first return to Molineux since he was sacked in February after almost six years in charge of Wolves.

By contrast, the crowd chanted 'what a load of rubbish' at their own team, who failed to register an attempt on target.

Frustrated fans also chanted 'you don't know what you are doing' when Solbakken replaced Kevin Doyle with Jermaine Pennant as part of a triple substitution.

And McCarthy warned: "The ones who were singing to get me out are doing it to Stale Solbakken. Be careful – you might get what you wish for."

Victory was McCarthy's seventh in 12 games in charge during which Ipswich have gone from bottom to within a point of Wolves, who were third when he took over.

The 53-year-old was genuinely touched at the reception he received from home fans.

He said: "I would be lying if I said it was nothing special because it was. In my last game here (a 5-1 defeat against Albion after which he was sacked), I had to go out of the back door and I will never forget that.

"That was a really horrible day for me. "So to have won and to have had the applause and ovation I got, I think shows what most Wolves fans really thought about me as opposed to the minority that wouldn't let me leave by the front door.

"But that is a lasting memory for me now – being on the pitch and being applauded off. It was lovely and that's how I'd like to remember my time here rather than anything else.

"Thank you to all of them who did that for me."

McCarthy knew the Molineux masses would start taking their frustrations out on the team if they didn't start well.

He said: "I know if Wolves don't start well, the crowd get edgy. That team is a good Championship side – more than half of them have won the Championship.

"So I knew if we could stop them and keep them quiet we might have a good day."
