McCarthy looking to sign 'impact' players
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today revealed he wants to sign "impact" players this month – but won't be selling any big guns to fund them.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today revealed he wants to sign "impact" players this month – but won't be selling any big guns to fund them.
McCarthy also all but ruled out signing foreign imports this month, and the club have not signed West Ham striker Frederic Piquionne, as was reported elsewhere today.
The 33-year-old is available and has been talked about, but Wolves have not made a move to sign him.
The Wolves boss has been linked with a deal for Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones, possibly through a swap.
But he will not entertain losing Steven Fletcher, Kevin Doyle or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
"No-one wants to lose their best players, to help someone else," said McCarthy.
"If you think I could get some money in from one to get two players, where you going to get those other two?
"If you sell one, you can find the two you were going to buy have gone upby 20 per cent.
"I'm not trying to sell anybody to buy anyone. Who's going to loan anyone out, regular first-teamers?
"They all keep waiting trying to do sensible deals, and then it comes to it at the end of the window, some panic and do other deals."
McCarthy is unlikely to sign foreign players this month.
"Consider the foreign players we brought in," he said. "Zubar will tell you he found it hard to settle.
"Jelle has gone back to Belgium and he's scoring goals for fun.
"He's a really good player, but he found it hard here – the toughness of it, the intensity of training to cope with it."
