Matt Taylor was already a fan of Chey Dunkley, long before the defender scored the goal which earned him his second win as Shrewsbury boss.

Dunkley’s header ultimately proved decisive as Town beat Burton 2-1 on Tuesday night, capping an impressive all-round performance on his first start of the season.

The display came as no surprise to Taylor, who has admired the centre-back since first watching him play for Oxford from the stands more than six years ago.

“Chey was a younger player then,” recalls Taylor. “My father-in-law was a season ticket holder at Oxford, so I would quite often get dragged up to the Kassam Stadium when he was playing.

“He made a big difference to us on Tuesday. We gave him a bit of a free role, licence to go and head the ball. His goal, I thought, was outstanding. He was marked by their best header of the ball and blew him away.”
