The former Dagenham & Redbridge frontman had played only 42 minutes of league football before his 30-minute cameo from the bench in Saturday’s win over Accrington Stanley.

His substitution received a big roar from the Town fans, who are keen to see more of the forward after his prolific pre-season spell.

“It depends on the situation of the game,” said boss Askey on the 22-year-old’s impact.

“He’s still learning and improving – his goal ratio in friendlies is good.

“He has got more of an eye for goal than other players.

“There are other parts of his game that he has to improve but it’s not just him, there are other players that aren’t playing that have to improve and push for places.

“He didn’t have a lot of the ball but the situation called for the extra man up front.”

Askey has said that he sees Okenabirhie as an option to play from the left or in a front two, rather than as a sole striker.

The attacker is likely to feature in tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy visit of Tranmere. Askey said ahead of the clash with Micky Mellon’s men: “It gives us chance to have a look at one or two more players, one or two need a rest.”
