John Askey has hailed Lee Angol's impact after the Shrewsbury striker put in a impressive display on his full debut.

The 24-year-old, signed from Mansfield Town on deadline day, netted a bizarre goal at Luton Town to put Shrewsbury 2-1 up but the hosts rallied and sealed a 3-2 win.

Angol profited from a James Shea error in the Hatters goal, as the keeper opted to role the ball out of his hands – thinking he had a free-kick – leaving Angol free to knock it around him and into the net.

But the striker, who has been struggling for fitness after a lack of pre-season, played the 90 minutes, helped create Shaun Whalley's first half penalty, and could have made it 3-3 with a late chance.

Askey said: "We were all screaming at him to put it in (the net). We could see the goalkeeper had been told to play on but obviously he didn't.

"It was a great opportunity for us but I thought that Lee did really well considering he had a lot of harsh treatment from the referee, a lot of fouls on him.

"He stood up to it, showed pace and control and he was a plus.

"We perhaps should've scored towards the end but he had a hand in getting the penalty, he laid Shaun (Whalley) in, it was a good debut for him.

"It's a plus but, where I've been happy apart from the result, on Saturday was different."

Kenilworth Road was bemused as quick-thinking from Angol left Shea red-faced and the hosts facing a deficit for the second time.

Askey added: "The referee told him to carry on. Think it was an offside but because the ref had told him to play on, once he played on, it was in play.

"We took advantage of it. If it had been my goalkeeper I wouldn't have been too happy or with the referee.

"He'd got it. There was no reason for him not to play. If you've got the ball why'd you want a free-kick? That's why we were screaming at Lee.

"It'll give him confidence as well."
