Paul Hurst: Interest in Shrewsbury Town stars is good thing

Paul Hurst wants Shrewsbury to embrace the ‘positive’ of higher-ranked clubs showing interest in his high-fliers.

Unbeaten Town are four points clear at the top of League One and the boss expects more scouts and talent-spotters to pay attention to his new-look side.

A report earlier in the week suggested Championship sides were tracking the progress of midfielder Jon Nolan – but Hurst insists the club are in a good position with players attached to lengthy deals.

“No it doesn’t worry me, I see it as a positive,” said the Town chief.

“If we were bottom of the league then I don’t think there would be many people watching.

“I think we have to embrace that. If there’s ever a conversation to be had in January or at the end of the season, then we can have that.

“But we know where we are with each player’s situation and contract, we have to deal with it.”

Hurst believed a number of this summer’s signings had the potential to play at a higher level.

But the manager added a note of warning to his squad, saying that interest will only continue if the performance levels remain the same.

“One thing that certainly won’t happen will be people moving on if they take their eye off the ball, that’s important,” he added. “They’ve got to keep producing. Of course, I’d fight to keep them, as far as I’m concerned no-one’s for sale.

“I think the chairman would be happy for me to say that we don’t need to sell anyone – we’re trying to build something.

“With that in mind, if there is ever interest, someone’s going to have to come with proper offers and conduct business in the right way.”

Town host Scunthorpe tomorrow with no fresh injury worries.

Meanwhile, Town goalkeeper Dean Henderson has received another England Under-21 call-up for games against Scotland and Andorra. He misses Town’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with West Brom and the league clash at Walsall.
